Thermal Lance in Action

]]> As the Thermal Lance burns, it throws out molten metal, rock anything in it's way.

A thermic lance is a blowtorch that uses steel and oxygen as a burning agent instead of acetyline gas and oxygen like you would use in a blow torch.

The thermal lance burns at 7,000 to 8,000 °F which is hot enough to melt rock. This also means that it's hot enough to melt through anything that melts at a lower temperature than rock, which means you have to be very careful where you aim the torch because it will burn a hole through a 1/2" thick steel table in seconds.

Lava Glowing Bright

]]> This is a pool of lava slowly cooling next to the granite boulder.

It has crusted over on top, but is still very hot below the surface.

Making Lava

]]> Using a thermal lance, we burn a hole through a granite boulder. The glowing stuff is lava and steel.

Uchronia: Fire Cave

]]> Uchronia is transitioning from this world to another one.

The flames have not yet set the top of the structure on fire, but inside one of the entrances, it's all ablaze.

Arms Raised

]]> The arms of the Burning Man are now raised and the pyrotechnic show is about to begin.

Gasoline Cannon

]]> This is called a gasoline cannon. You take one gallon of gasoline and ignite it, which creates a really beautiful and very hot fireball. One gallon of gasoline can propel a Geo Metro / Suzuki Swift 50 miles down the road. And it can create a fire ball that is a lot bigger than this photo.

You would think gasoline companies would be all over promoting these things, but so far no sponsorship deals with Texaco.

Flaming Lawnmower

]]> This is one of my favorite effects I love to do. I take a perfectly good lawnmower and run it through the flames. It's especially fun when the gas tank explodes. If you look closely, you can see an actual firefighter watching what I am doing.

Does he look happy? He should.

It's not his jurisdiction.

The best part is taking the lawnmower back to Home Depot for a refund. It doesn't say anywhere in the manual not to run it through a fire...

Fireworks Platform

]]> This platform was built on the beach at low tide. It is loaded up with wood, flammable materials such as an old Christmas Tree and lots and lots of firecrackers and other fireworks devices.

Fire Platform over Water

]]> This is an example of a fully engulfed fire platform. Construction was quick and straightforward. The results were rather amazing. The structure was built using wood, then more wood was added to the top of the structure. The end result was a fire that burned for a very long time before collapsing.

Beach Fire with Pyrotechnics

]]> There are several proven ways to light a bonfire, but not a one I can think of that is as much fun as dumping several pounds of black powder and a large amount of fireworks into the middle of a bunch of oak timbers.
